Munich, 14 July 2026
Munich has banned the watering of private lawns and the filling of private pools through a general decree effective immediately, because daily water consumption has risen to more than 360 million liters.
Background: Persistent drought and rising consumption
Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) justified the measure with an "außergewöhnlich trockenen Winter und Frühling", which has left the resources of the water supply "derzeit äußerst strapaziert". He had therefore decided, "in Abstimmung mit dem Referat für Klima- und Umweltschutz (RKU) und den Stadtwerken", to introduce mandatory savings measures.
The decree takes effect immediately and applies until 1 August 2026, unless revoked earlier. An extension is possible if the drought continues. Those who violate the rules face fines of up to 50,000 euros, according to the city.
