Two months before the Russian parliamentary election, opposition politician Boris Nadeshdin was arrested in Moscow, after the Ministry of Justice had previously classified him as a "foreign agent."
Arrest and initial reactions
Nadeshdin himself had made his arrest public via the messaging service Telegram. "Die Uniformierten hätten ihn abgeholt und mit zur Polizeidienststelle genommen", the politician wrote on Telegram. The reason for his detention was initially unknown.
The Russian Ministry of Justice had classified Nadeshdin as a "foreign agent" the week before. Persons classified as "foreign agents" in Russia are, according to the relevant legislation, not permitted to participate in political votes. The designation is used by the power apparatus to stigmatize dissenters.
