Russian opposition politician Nadeschdin withdraws from Duma election and speaks of political silence

Legal steps against the candidate

Shortly before his withdrawal, Nadeschdin had been classified by the Russian authorities as a so-called foreign agent. This classification has immediate legal consequences: a person classified as a foreign agent cannot run as a candidate in elections in Russia. His participation in the Duma election was thus de facto ruled out.

In addition, Nadeschdin had only recently been sentenced to a fine by a Russian court. The reason given was the display of extremist symbols. Specifically, it concerned a widely shared video featuring an image of the deceased Putin critic Navalny. Alexei Navalny continues to be classified as extremist in Russia even after his death. With the conviction, Nadeschdin now has a prior criminal record.

Nadeschdin had published the image of Navalny on his social networks, which triggered the proceedings against him. The example shows just how much the Russian judiciary can already turn the mere showing of certain images into a criminal offense. The hurdles for legal criticism of the Kremlin are thus falling further.

Stages of a political career

Back in 2024, Nadeschdin had run in the Russian presidential election and had positioned himself as an opponent of the war in Ukraine. He later described his success at the time as a miracle. During the campaign, he said: "Ich fürchte nichts." Despite a lack of popularity, opposition figures living in exile had called for voting for him. Russian voters partly reacted with the saying: "Da könnte auch ein Meerschweinchen antreten, Hauptsache, es ist nicht Putin." The Russian Central Election Commission at the time rejected hundreds of thousands of collected signatures with reference to alleged formal errors.

In his current statement, Nadeschdin drew a direct line between his candidacy for the presidency in 2024 and the pressure he is now facing. He retrospectively described his earlier presidential candidacy as megalomaniacal, but said he had enjoyed outwitting the system. At the same time, he emphasized that Putin must vacate his post, and called the war in Ukraine a fatal mistake by Putin.

Notable is the choice of words of the politician, who always described the war in Ukraine with the legally compliant Russian formulation "militärische Spezialoperation." This vocabulary too shows how narrow the corridor for criticism has become, even while observing the official language conventions.

Pressure from the security structures

Russian exile media suspect that powerful siloviki, that is, representatives of the security structures, are behind the pressure on Nadeschdin. The chronological sequence of the classification as a foreign agent, the conviction, and the now forced withdrawal points to a coordinated course of action aimed at preventing even moderate critics of the Kremlin from running in elections.

With Nadeschdin's withdrawal, the already narrow spectrum of open criticism within the Russian political establishment loses yet another voice. The parliamentary election scheduled for September 2026 will therefore likely take place without any notable opposition candidates from within the country who express criticism of Putin and the war in Ukraine.
