Jonas Vingegaard Wins First Mountain Finish at Giro d'Italia, Cuts Lead Gap in Half

Ecuador's Jhonatan Narvaez won the sprint for second place ahead of Spain's Enric Mas, with both riders finishing in the same time as Vingegaard after being part of a long breakaway. Italian Diego Ulissi rounded out the top five, 11 seconds behind the leaders.

The stage saw an early breakaway of 15 riders establish a maximum lead of eight minutes before the peloton, led by Eulalio's team, began gradually reeling them in on the approach to the final climb.

Breakaway Efforts

Race leader Eulalio finished safely in the main group to retain the pink jersey. 'It was a controlled day for us,' said Eulalio. 'We knew Vingegaard would be strong today, but we limited our losses.'

Austrian rider Felix Gall remains fourth overall, 2:24 behind Eulalio, after finishing alongside his Decathlon teammate Gregor Mühlberger. The pair crossed the line with the main peloton, maintaining their positions in the general classification.

General Classification Impact

The 195km stage featured three categorized climbs, with the final ascent to the finish in Chiavari proving decisive. Riders faced gradients of up to 12% in the closing kilometers, testing their endurance after nearly five hours of racing.

Monday brings a flatter stage from Imperia to Novi Ligure, covering 175km with only two third-category climbs. The route appears suited to sprinters or breakaway specialists looking for stage glory.
