Piancavallo, 30 May 2026

Jonas Vingegaard stormed to victory on Stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday, all but sealing his first overall win at the race, while Austria's Felix Gall secured his grip on second place ahead of the final stage in Rome.

The Danish rider, who wears the pink jersey, attacked on the final climb to the summit finish at Piancavallo and crossed the line alone, 1 minute and 15 seconds ahead of Gall. Canadian Derek Gee-West finished second on the stage, with Italian Giulio Ciccone taking third.

Vingegaard now leads the general classification by 5 minutes and 22 seconds over Gall. Australian Jai Hindley, a former Giro champion, sits in third place, 6 minutes and 25 seconds behind the leader.

How the Stage Unfolded

The 200-kilometer mountain stage from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo featured two ascents of a 14.5-kilometer climb. An early breakaway group built a lead of more than four and a half minutes before the peloton, driven by Vingegaard's Visma-Lease a Bike team, began to reel them in.

On the first climb to Piancavallo, the Visma team increased the pace, with Gall's Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale squad closely following. Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek secured the mountains classification by scoring a point at the first passage of the summit.

The decisive move came on the second ascent. Vingegaard attacked approximately 11 kilometers from the finish. Gall briefly attempted to follow but was unable to match the pace and was dropped. The pink jersey then caught and passed the remaining breakaway riders to take his fifth stage win of this edition.

Vingegaard's Historic Achievement

Speaking after the stage, Vingegaard said: 'Heute war der Tag der Entscheidung.

The 29-year-old is competing in the Giro d'Italia for the first time. With the overall victory now virtually assured, he is set to become only the eighth cyclist in history to win all three Grand Tours, having previously won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 and the Vuelta a España in 2025.

For Felix Gall, the stage result confirmed a breakthrough performance. The Felix Gall from East Tyrol defended his second place overall and is now guaranteed a podium finish in Rome. Only one Austrian has previously finished in the top three of a Grand Tour: Adolf Christian, who placed third at the Tour de France in 1957.

Gall's Podium Milestone

Gall acknowledged the mental toll of the race. 'Vor allem die mentale Übermüdung ist groß,' he said. He added: 'Gestern in der Früh war ich in der Früh angespannt und beim Rennen locker. Heute war es anders. Aber ich bin extrem happy und zufrieden, dass ich so abgeschlossen habe. Aber wir haben in Rom noch ein paar Runden zu drehen.'

The Austrian also described the atmosphere on the road. 'Es ist extrem cool, meine Familie und viele bekannte Gesichter waren auf der Strecke, ich habe meinen Namen oft auf der Strecke gehört, das ist etwas sehr Cooles.'

Jai Hindley, who rides for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, finished third on the stage and remains third overall. Derek Gee-West, who placed fourth on the day, rides for Lidl-Trek alongside Ciccone.

The Final Stage in Rome

The final stage on Sunday is a 131-kilometer route through Rome. Starting in the city, the course heads to Ostia on the coast before returning to a city circuit that must be completed eight times, finishing at the Circus Maximus.

By tradition, the wearer of the pink jersey is not attacked on the final stage of a Grand Tour, and the general classification is not expected to change. The stage is expected to suit sprinters.

Vingegaard reflected on his team's strategy. 'Am letzten Tag in den Bergen wollten wir unbedingt auf Sieg fahren,' he said. 'Wir mussten ein bisschen improvisieren, der Plan war, spät anzugreifen.'

Looking Ahead

The 109th edition of the Giro d'Italia concludes on Sunday. Vingegaard's victory would mark his fourth Grand Tour title and set up a highly anticipated clash with defending champion Tadej Pogačar at the Tour de France, which starts on July 4.

Gall, meanwhile, can look forward to celebrating his achievement with family and friends. 'Ich bin extrem happy, es so abzuschließen. Meine Familie, Freunde, bekannte Gesichter waren an der Strecke. Ich habe ständig meinen Namen gehört. Morgen haben wir ein paar Runden in Rom zu drehen, in den nächsten Tagen werde ich es mehr genießen können,' he said.
