The NASA space telescope Swift, which has been observing gamma-ray bursts for nearly two decades, will enter Earth's atmosphere and is expected to burn up following the failure of a rescue mission.
The US space agency NASA confirmed that a planned rescue mission for the Swift space telescope was not successful. This seals the fate of the observatory: it will enter Earth's atmosphere in the coming months and largely burn up during reentry.
A Pioneer of Gamma-Ray Astronomy
Swift was launched in November 2004 aboard a Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral spaceport and was considered one of NASA's most productive space telescopes. According to academic publications, the mission revolutionized the study of gamma-ray bursts, the most energetic explosions in the known universe, and provided data over many years on cosmic phenomena such as supernovae and the merger of neutron stars.
