Kathmandu, Nepal — May 17, 2026
Two Nepalese climbers have rewritten mountaineering history by setting new records on Mount Everest this week. Kami Rita Sherpa, 56, reached the summit for the 32nd time on Sunday at 10:12 AM local time, while Lhakpa Sherpa, 52, completed her 11th ascent, further cementing their legacies as the most accomplished Everest climbers in history.
Record-Breaking Ascents
Kami Rita Sherpa, a veteran guide from Nepal’s indigenous Sherpa community, first summited Everest in 1994 at the age of 24 and has climbed the peak nearly every year since. His latest ascent breaks his own previous record of 31 summits, set just last year. A seasoned mountaineer, he has also conquered several other 8,000-meter peaks in the Himalayas.
