Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that in several Christian villages in southern Lebanon the wish had been expressed to be annexed by Israel; representatives of these communities and the mayor of Rmeish rejected this account against the backdrop of the conflict with Hezbollah.
Netanyahu stated on Sunday in an interview with the US network Fox News that in some towns in southern Lebanon the wish had been expressed "to be annexed by Israel because we are protecting them from the Hezbollah fanatics who want to kill them." He was referring to the ongoing course of confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah.
Pushback came promptly from Lebanon. According to the Lebanese news agency NNA, the mayor of Rmeish, one of the communities in question, dismissed such a step as "absolutely out of the question." He and other representatives made clear that there were no spokespersons from the named villages who had addressed such a request to Israel.
