Vienna, 03 July 2026
From 7 July 2026, new passenger cars in the EU must have a series of additional safety systems on board, including emergency braking, lane keeping and reversing assistance as well as an accident data recorder.
The new requirements result from EU Regulation 2019/2144, which will become binding for newly registered passenger cars from next Monday. Manufacturers must equip their models accordingly before bringing them onto the European market. The regulations therefore affect only new vehicles, not cars that have already been registered.
Which systems will be mandatory in future
Among the mandatory systems is an emergency braking assistance system that brakes independently when a collision is imminent. In addition, there will be a lane keeping assistant that prevents unintentional departure from the lane, as well as an intelligent speed assistant. A reversing assistance system and an accident data recorder are also required.
