Paris, July 13, 2026
Germany, France and eight other European states announced in Paris on Monday the establishment of a joint missile defense coalition for Ukraine, in response to ongoing Russian attacks with ballistic missiles.
The meeting, convened at the invitation of France and the United Kingdom, was attended by Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, according to sources among the participants. The German government confirmed the participation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In addition to the establishment of a missile defense, the consultations also focused on possible joint military maneuvers.
Who is participating in the coalition?
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke in Paris of a "purely defensive coalition against ballistic missiles." With the founding of the missile defense coalition, those capabilities that Europe requires would be strengthened, he said. Macron stated explicitly: "Angesichts der ballistischen Bedrohung treffen wir eine klare Entscheidung: Wir schützen die Ukraine, stärken unsere gemeinsame Sicherheit und bauen ein Europa der Verteidigung auf".
