Managua, July 20, 2026
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced at a rally marking the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution in Managua that there would no longer be any elections in Nicaragua in which the opposition could take over the government.
Background: Ortega's return to power
Before thousands of supporters, the 80-year-old Ortega declared on Sunday (local time) in the capital Managua that he intended to prevent any possibility of a political change of power. He addressed himself directly to his political opponents and to the United States, whose influence in the region he has repeatedly criticized. Referring to past election defeats of the opposition, Ortega said: "Sie können es vergessen, hier in Nicaragua wird es keine Wahlen mehr geben, bei denen sie versuchen könnten, die Regierung zu übernehmen und die Macht an sich zu reißen."
