The ITIA explained that the responsible bodies will now examine the case under the rules of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP). A provisional suspension is normally the first formal step when a player returns a positive A-sample; the final sanction depends on the outcome of the further proceedings, which include, among other things, the possibility of a B-sample analysis and a hearing.

With the suspension, Kyrgios is provisionally excluded from competition. This means he will not be able to take part in ATP tournaments or Grand Slam events in the coming weeks. It is noteworthy that, although the positive sample dates from June, the confirmation came only after the player's Wimbledon appearances. This raises the question of whether and in what form the matches played on grass will be assessed retroactively. The ITIA has so far not commented on this specifically.

In the Australian media, meanwhile, the discussion centres on the consequences for Kyrgios' sporting future. Should the proceedings end with a ban of several months, reconnecting with the world elite of tennis would become even more difficult. The next regular date on the ATP Tour remains on the calendar in the meantime.
