Vondroušová banned for four years after refusing doping test

The ITIA rejected the explanation. The agency stated that Vondroušová had provided "keine überzeugende Begründung" for her refusal. The reference to stress, mental health, and security concerns was also "keine überzeugende Rechtfertigung", according to a statement.

ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse defended the actions of the control officers. "Unvorhersehbare Kontrollen sind ein unverzichtbares Instrument zum Schutz des sauberen Sports", she said. "Unsere Tester sind gut ausgebildet und professionell, und das Geschlecht unseres Testbeobachters stimmt immer mit dem des Spielers überein. Sie tragen stets einen Ausweis bei sich, und die Spieler haben die Möglichkeit, ihre Identität auf andere Weise zu überprüfen, falls sie sich einmal unsicher sind."

Vondroušová had emphasized in a statement that she felt "zermürbt" and "in meinem eigenen Zuhause nicht mehr sicher". She cited, among other things, years of strain from injuries, constant pressure, and sleep problems. The incident had occurred "weil ich nach Monaten körperlicher und seelischer Belastung an meine Grenzen gestoßen bin", she wrote.

The ban comes for a player who had celebrated her greatest career achievement only three years ago. In July 2023, Vondroušová triumphed at Wimbledon, becoming the first unseeded player to win the tournament. Since then, she had struggled with inconsistent form and injuries.

Consequences for the career

Vondroušová has not played a tournament since mid-January 2026. The ban means she will also be unable to compete on the professional tour in the coming years. She will lose not only world ranking points and prize money, but also the opportunity to take part in the Grand Slam tournaments that form the heart of the tennis calendar.

The ITIA stressed that the independence and professionalism of doping control officers are central to the credibility of the sport. Without unannounced tests, a fair competitive environment cannot be guaranteed, the agency argued. Vondroušová had failed to meet her obligation to cooperate, making the sanction unavoidable.

Vondroušová has the option of challenging the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Whether she will take this route was initially unclear. In Halep's case, such a challenge led to a significant reduction of the ban, although that case involved an analytical finding of a prohibited substance.

Behind the affair lies a history that has caused a stir in the Czech tennis scene. At Christmas 2016, fellow Czech player Petra Kvitová was attacked and injured in her apartment by a man who had posed as a craftsman. Vondroušová referred to similar security concerns in connection with her refusal, without naming a specific incident.

The tennis world reacted with mixed voices. While supporters of strict anti-doping rules welcomed the decision, others expressed understanding for the psychological strain on top athletes. The debate over how to handle mental health in elite sport is likely to receive fresh impetus from the case.

The ban takes effect retroactively as of the date of the refused test. Since Vondroušová has not played an official tournament since January 2026, little changes in the coming months for now. The ITIA announced that it would further strengthen its anti-doping programs in the coming year. Plans include, among other things, additional training for players on the procedure for doping controls, as well as closer cooperation with national associations to build trust in the testing system.

Vondroušová herself has not made any further public statements recently. Her management merely said that it was reviewing the written reasons for the ruling and reserved the right to exhaust all legal avenues if necessary. The 2026 tennis season meanwhile continues without one of the most popular players of recent years.
