Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová, winner of Wimbledon 2023, has been banned by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for four years, until June 2030, for refusing to provide a doping sample.
What happened in December 2025?
The sanction was made public on June 22, 2026. According to the ITIA, the player refused to allow a doping control officer into her apartment in early December 2025 and subsequently did not provide a sample. Under anti-doping rules, a refused test must be treated like a positive finding, explained the agency responsible for integrity in tennis. The ban runs until June 21, 2030.
Vondroušová had first publicly disclosed the incident in April, attributing it to an anxiety disorder, a period of physical and mental exhaustion, and security concerns. "I have so reagiert, wie es jemand tut, der in diesem Moment Angst hatte", the Czech player stated. It had been "darum gegangen, mich sicher zu fühlen, und nicht darum, irgendetwas zu vermeiden", she wrote on Instagram.
