Vollering decides the finale at the Coletta di Brondello

Antonia Niedermaier completed the Giro d'Italia Women with the best result of her career at a major stage race. The 23-year-old finished third on the ninth and final stage, which started and finished in Saluzzo, and thereby moved up one place in the final classification. The overall victory went to the Dutch rider Demi Vollering with an advantage of 34 seconds over Niedermaier.

Vollering had controlled the race over long stretches and launched the first attacks as early as 90 kilometers from the finish. Shortly before the summit of the Coletta di Brondello, Demi Vollering made the decisive attack against her compatriot Anna van der Breggen and distanced her rival some 39 kilometers from the finish. This saw Vollering seize the Maglia Rosa, which van der Breggen had been wearing at the start of the stage.
