The Danish pro cyclist Jonas Vingegaard has abandoned the race after a serious crash on Stage 15 of the Tour de France with suspected broken collarbone, having been woken by anti-doping inspectors at 2 a.m. the night before.

The incident occurred on one of this year's toughest mountain stages, which finished at the Plateau de Solaison. Some 20 kilometres from the finish, Vingegaard came down in a poorly secured, poorly visible right-hand bend at a roundabout and had to abandon.

Crash at the Roundabout

Already on the night before the stage, the anti-doping authority had come in for fierce criticism. Vingegaard himself reported that someone had dragged him from his sleep by ringing his hotel doorbell at 2 a.m. Vingegaard said: „Ich habe gut geschlafen, aber dann hat jemand um zwei Uhr nachts an meiner Tür geklingelt.“ He added that he considered testing fundamentally right, but pointed to its consequences: „Es ist gut, dass sie testen, aber wenn es die Leistung beeinflusst und deinen Schlaf, dann denke ich nicht, dass es so gut ist.“
