The International Testing Agency (ITA) has carried out nighttime doping tests on top riders such as Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar at the Tour de France, triggering a controversy over the burden placed on athletes and the effectiveness of anti-doping work.

Trigger: In the middle of the night

Doping tests have come into focus at the ongoing Tour de France because the International Testing Agency (ITA) woke riders in the middle of the night. As the French sports newspaper L'Équipe reported, the ITA had requested a judicial authorization from a Paris court to carry out the controls outside the usual hours. Under cycling regulations, tests are normally only permitted between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.; in France, controls outside that window require a judicial authorization.
