The reduction in VAT on selected basic foodstuffs from 10 to 4.9 percent, in effect since the beginning of July, is being passed on to a large extent to consumers, according to an initial rapid analysis by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB).
The OeNB published a corresponding "Policy Brief" on Monday, which is available to the editorial team. According to it, data from the bank's in-house web-scraping tool, which monitors several thousand food prices in Austrian supermarkets daily, shows that prices for the affected products fell noticeably in the first week of July. "The comparison of price developments between products affected and not affected by the tax reduction shows that the tax reduction was passed on to consumers to a considerable extent in the first week of July," the analysis states.
