Oil prices rose noticeably after an attack on the Saudi oil field Shaybah, while the ongoing military confrontations in the oil-rich Persian Gulf region and the risk of renewed escalation following the US midterm elections supported prices.

Quotes for the important North Sea Brent crude benchmark climbed significantly during the trading day. Observers pointed to market uncertainty triggered by the attack and concerns about supply bottlenecks, as Shaybah is one of Saudi Arabia's most important production facilities. The Saudi grade also became more expensive, while traders described the further developments in the Gulf as difficult to assess.

Rebecca Babin, commodities trader at CIBC Private Wealth Group, said the ongoing military attacks in the oil-rich Persian Gulf region in recent days and the risk of renewed escalation after the midterm elections in the United States had supported oil prices. Market participants were reacting directly to the military escalation between the US and Iran, during which attacks on Saudi territory had already occurred.
