Germany’s forests remain in poor condition, with just one in five trees classified as healthy, according to the latest national forest status report.

Widespread Damage and Limited Recovery

The report, based on an examination of over 46,000 trees, found that visible needle and leaf loss in tree crowns remains "at a very high level," showing little improvement since 2024. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture concluded that forests have not recovered from the drought years of 2018 to 2020.

While some stabilization was noted in 2025 despite unfavorable weather conditions, the overall health of Germany’s woodlands remains precarious. Minister Alois Rainer acknowledged the challenges but pointed to progress in forest restructuring efforts. "The situation has stabilized overall," he said.
