Budapest, 14 June 2026
At a FIDESZ party congress on Saturday in Budapest, Viktor Orbán was confirmed as party chairman by a large majority; afterward he ruled out a change of course.
Vote of confidence with a condition
729 of the 737 delegates voted for the 63-year-old; there were no votes against and eight abstentions. According to the report, there was no opposing candidate. Previously, Orbán had said that in a board meeting immediately after the 12 April parliamentary election he had offered his resignation as party chief; according to insiders, however, no vote was taken on it at all.
In his speech at the party congress, Orbán said: "Für die Wahlniederlage übernehme ich die Verantwortung." At the same time, he rejected calls for a strategic realignment: "Ihr sollt wissen: Ich habe nicht die geringste Lust, mich zu ändern. Ich vollziehe weder eine halbe noch eine 180-Grad-Wende." The 63-year-old also said it was time for the "jüngere Generation" to take over the leadership.
