Ingrid Thurnher, the current Director General of Austrian public broadcaster ORF, informed staff on Thursday that she will not submit an application for the leadership position beginning in 2027.

The announcement came on the final day of the application window, in an email to the workforce. "Ich werde mich nicht erneut als Generaldirektorin bewerben," Thurnher wrote, confirming her decision to step aside when her current term ends.

Thurnher, who was appointed to the role in mid-April with 31 out of 35 votes from the ORF Foundation Board, had previously stated she intended to use her eight months at the helm to "die Weichen für einen besseren ORF" zu stellen – to set the course for a better ORF.

In her message, the 63-year-old explained that forgoing a further term brings "eine gewisse Freiheit mit sich: Ich muss nicht taktieren, ich muss nicht tun, was opportun ist." She argued this independence allows her to focus on what is necessary for the broadcaster's fresh start.
