Vienna, 28 May 2026

ORF Director General Ingrid Thurnher informed the broadcaster's 4,000 employees on Thursday morning that she will not apply for the leadership position for the 2027 to 2031 term.

The announcement came on the final day of the application deadline for the role, which oversees Austria's largest public-service media company with annual revenues of around 1.1 billion euros, mostly from household license fees.

Thurnher, who was confirmed as the regular director general in mid-April with 31 out of 35 votes from the ORF Foundation Board, stated that forgoing the application was a strategic advantage in the current climate.

A Decision for Independence

"Denn die Entscheidung, mich nicht für eine weitere Amtszeit zu bewerben, bringt eine gewisse Freiheit mit sich: Ich muss nicht taktieren, ich muss nicht tun, was opportun ist," she wrote in an email to the staff.
