The Chinese People's Liberation Army fired an intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine into the South Pacific at noon on Monday (local time), prompting sharp criticism from neighboring countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

As navy spokesperson Wang Xuemeng announced on the online service WeChat, the missile, equipped with a "training warhead," was "successfully" launched from a nuclear submarine at 12:01 p.m. local time (6:01 a.m. CEST) and "struck precisely in the designated sea area" in the Pacific. According to the report, it was a Dong Feng-31 missile, which can be fitted with nuclear warheads. The warhead itself was a dummy, according to the military. Beijing spoke of a "training warhead"; the launch was part of an annual routine training program, and affected countries had been informed in advance.
