Panama City, 23 August 2026
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has reduced the number of ship passages allowed through the waterway after reporting that rainfall between May and August was about 34 percent below the historical average for those months.
The ACP, which administers the canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the Isthmus of Panama, said on 6 May 2026 that precipitation during the four-month window had fallen well short of long-term norms. Officials attributed the shortfall to the lingering influence of El Niño, a climate pattern that has repeatedly disrupted rainfall over Central America in recent years.
