Panama City, August 26, 2026

Weather authorities in Panama and El Salvador have issued a drought alert due to the El Niño phenomenon, which experts say is "sehr stark" pronounced, warning of sometimes drastic declines in rainfall across Central America.

The declaration was made by the responsible meteorologists of both countries on Tuesday and referenced current model calculations on the development of the climate phenomenon in the Pacific. Accordingly, water temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific are expected to remain elevated, further reinforcing the typical El Niño pattern over the American continent.

Weather Authorities Sound the Alarm

In Panama, the head of the weather authority, Calzadilla, spoke to the newspaper "Prensa". A direct consequence of the "sehr stark" pronounced weather phenomenon this time, in addition to increased rainfall on the Panamanian Caribbean coast, is a significant decrease in rainfall across large parts of the country, as Calzadilla said according to the newspaper "Prensa".
