Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic is the new national coach of the Senegalese football team, succeeding Pape Thiaw.
As the Senegalese Football Federation announced on Tuesday, Vladimir Petkovic will take charge of the Teranga Lions. According to the federation, the contract runs for three years and is aligned with the cycle leading up to the 2030 home World Cup. Petkovic succeeds Pape Thiaw, who had managed the team on an interim basis following the Africa Cup of Nations.
For Petkovic, the posting in Dakar — after stints in Switzerland with FC Sion and at Lazio Rome — is the third national team of his coaching career. Most recently he had managed Algeria, where he celebrated the greatest achievement in the federation's history: reaching the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Following disappointing performances at the two most recent major tournaments, however, his contract in Algiers was not renewed.
