According to a report by the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, approximately 17.3 percent of people in Hesse were affected by poverty in 2025, placing the state above the federal average of 16.1 percent.
Around one million people in Hesse live in poverty, according to the association – roughly every sixth person. The Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband Hessen presented the current figures on Tuesday in Wiesbaden. Compared to the previous year, the rate has significantly increased: in 2024, the poverty rate in Hesse was still 15.5 percent. Nationwide, the average is 16.1 percent, meaning Hesse is clearly above the overall German figure according to the new data.
The poverty rate is calculated based on a European Union definition. Anyone with less than 60 percent of the median net income is considered at risk of poverty. For a single person, the threshold in 2025 was a monthly income of 1,445 euros, for a couple without children it was 2,168 euros. Single parents with one child were already considered at risk of poverty if they had less than 1,879 euros per month available.
