Passau, July 3, 2026
The Passau Landratsamt (district office) has declared the planning approval decision for Verbund's Riedl pumped-storage plant immediately enforceable, clearing the way for Bavaria's largest pumped-storage facility.
After more than 15 years of planning, the decision is regarded as an important milestone for the expansion of electricity storage in the Free State. The authority issued the decision and simultaneously ordered immediate enforceability, so that Verbund could begin preparatory work at this stage. Michael Strugl, CEO of the Austrian utility, spoke of a strong signal: „Die sofortige Vollziehbarkeit des Planfeststellungsbeschlusses ist ein starkes Signal für Versorgungssicherheit, Netzstabilität und die Energietransformation in Bayern und Österreich."
The project envisions a capacity of 300 megawatts and a storage volume of 3.5 gigawatt-hours per power cycle. The facility would thus nearly match the output of the seven existing pumped-storage plants in Bavaria, which together supply around 400 megawatts. Verbund puts the investment volume at more than 400 million euros.
