Mark Pieth has called on European football associations to defend themselves against FIFA President Gianni Infantino and, if necessary, to take antitrust legal action against FIFA.
In an interview with the "Tagesspiegel," Pieth outlined several ways in which the FIFA president, who is criticized especially in Europe, could be driven from office. In his assessment, the national associations thus have effective instruments at their disposal, which, however, have not been used so far.
Pieth, who between 2011 and 2013 chaired FIFA's independent governance commission, which was tasked with democratizing the world federation, paints a bleak picture of the state of the organization. No one would attack Infantino because he is considered "unantastbar." Another sentence from the interview captures the accusation in a concise formula: "Er denkt, über ihm ist nur noch Gott."
