Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is considering bringing the two Bundeswehr ships stationed in Djibouti back to Germany this summer, and the German government is awaiting signals from the USA in talks with Iran about a mine-clearance mission in the Strait of Hormuz.
Background of the operation
The German government is heading toward a decision in the summer regarding a possible mine-clearance operation in the Strait of Hormuz. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said on Wednesday in Berlin that he was considering bringing the minehunter "Fulda" and the supply ship "Mosel" back home if the political conditions for an operation did not materialize. "We will then make the decision in the summer in good time so that, in case of doubt, our soldiers spend their summer at 40 degrees in Berlin rather than at almost 50 in Djibouti," Pistorius explained at a press conference also attended by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
