On Svalbard in Norway, a polar bear was shot after it came too close to a tour group and posed a danger to the people, according to authorities.
The incident occurred on the Norwegian island group of Svalbard, where encounters between polar bears and humans have been considered a serious safety risk for years. As the responsible authorities reported, the animal approached a tour group so closely that those in charge deemed the shooting a necessary protective measure.
Svalbard is the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago and lies far north of the mainland in the Arctic Ocean. The main settlement of Longyearbyen serves as the starting point for expeditions and tourism into one of the most sparsely populated regions of Europe. Authorities have long pointed out that polar bears there are classified as dangerous wildlife and should not be observed at close range.
