A 24-year-old hiker from Switzerland fell around 50 meters down a steep slope on Sunday in St. Gerold in the district of Bludenz in Vorarlberg after being kicked by a pony and was rescued by helicopter.
Accident sequence in St. Gerold
The accident occurred on Sunday at around 11:20 a.m. during a hike from St. Gerold toward Blon. As the emergency services reported, a couple from Switzerland was on an officially marked hiking trail when the pony unexpectedly kicked the man, throwing him off balance. The kick caused the hiker to enter steep terrain off the trail, and he then fell down the slope.
After the fall, the two hikers tried to regain the hiking trail that runs about 50 meters higher by climbing up the steep slope. In doing so, according to police, they realized their mistake and alerted the mountain rescue services to their predicament. Due to the nature of the terrain, the rescue could not be carried out on foot.
