Football Australia has extended national coach Tony Popovic's contract until next year's Asian Cup, just hours before the Socceroos' World Cup opener against Türkiye on Sunday (06:00 CEST).

Contract extension until 2027 Asian Cup

As the federation announced, the contract with the 52-year-old has been extended until next year's Asian Cup. Popovic took over the "Socceroos" in 2024 and led the team to their seventh World Cup appearance. According to profile information, the new contract runs until 31 July 2026.

Federation CEO Martin Kugeler justified the decision with the coach's sporting success: "Tony is a world-class coach and has proven that he not only achieves results but also develops talent." He also pointed to "the first direct qualification for the FIFA World Cup in twelve years". With the extension, Kugeler said, "creates clarity and enables the federation to plan with absolute confidence for the period after the tournament through to the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027."
