Nanyuki, June 9, 2026
During protests against an Ebola quarantine facility planned for US citizens in the Kenyan town of Nanyuki, one person was killed, according to the aid organization Vocal Africa.
Background of the protests
The demonstrators accused the United States of building a disease-control facility on Kenyan soil without adequately involving the local population. At a rally near Laikipia Air Base, 47-year-old Priscilla Waimani carried a Kenyan flag and told the AFP news agency: "Ich bin nicht glücklich mit der Entscheidung der USA, in unserem Land eine Quarantäneeinrichtung zu bauen." She added: "Laikipia ist doch keine Deponie."
The director of the aid organization Vocal Africa, Hussein Khalid, confirmed the death of a demonstrator. "Sein Tod ist bestätigt," said Khalid. According to human rights groups, two other people had already been killed on June 1 during earlier protests against the same facility.
