The environmental psychologist Sabine Pahl from the University of Vienna warns that heatwaves place a burden on mental health, hitting above all people with existing physical, social, or psychological limitations.

Strain on the psyche and sleep

„Hitzewellen wirken sich überproportional auf die mentale Gesundheit von Menschen aus, die bereits physisch, sozial oder psychisch benachteiligt sind", said Sabine Pahl, who works at the University of Vienna's Institute of Psychology of Cognition. The strain from extreme temperatures thus affects precisely those groups that already have fewer resources to protect themselves or recover.

On Monday, Pahl pointed to a large number of international studies that identify a link between high temperatures and an increase in psychological complaints. These include sleep disorders, increased irritability, depressive symptoms, and, in severe cases, heightened suicidality. Even individual hot days can have measurable effects on well-being, the researcher explained.
