Russian President Vladimir Putin has made his first visit to the Kuril Islands in the Pacific, drawing renewed objections from Tokyo, whose foreign minister described the chain, including Iturup, as inherent Japanese territory under international law.

The trip marks Putin's first known visit to the Kuril chain, four islands stretching between the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka. The visit comes against the backdrop of a territorial dispute that has shaped relations between the two countries since the Second World War ended.

A dispute rooted in the Second World War

Japan's top diplomat, Toshimitsu Motegi, used the occasion to restate Japan's long-standing position. He said that the so-called Northern Territories, including Etorofu (Iturup), are inherent territory of Japan both historically and from the perspective of international law. "Los Territorios del Norte, incluida la isla Etorofu (Iturup), son territorio inherente de Japón tanto históricamente como desde la perspectiva del derecho internacional", Motegi said, speaking through a translator.
