Russia has fired missiles from the Kuril Islands shortly after President Putin visited the island chain, which is disputed between Japan and Russia; Japan condemned the use of weapons sharply and pointed to a visit by President Putin that had taken place shortly before.
Missiles have been fired from the Kuril Islands in the Pacific, according to Japanese observers. The island chain lies north of the Japanese island of Hokkaido and has been disputed between Tokyo and Moscow since the end of the Second World War. Japan considers the southern islands – the so-called Northern Territories – its own national territory, while Russia has administered them de facto since 1945.
The missile launch followed a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the island chain. The visit was seen in Japan as a provocation and triggered diplomatic protests. Details on the type, range, and target of the missiles were not initially released in detail by the Japanese side.
