The Japanese government has officially protested against Vladimir Putin's visit to the Kuril Islands, a territory disputed with Moscow, summoning Russian ambassador Nikolai Nosdrev to express Tokyo's firm opposition.
The diplomatic dispute between Japan and Russia has flared up again following Putin's visit to the Kuril Islands, defined by Tokyo as the "Northern Territories." Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced the summoning of the Russian ambassador to the Japanese Foreign Ministry to present a formal government protest.
Motegi issued a statement in which he underlined Japan's historical and legal position on these islands, affirming that Tokyo considers the Northern Territories an integral part of its national territory. The Russian president's visit was deemed incompatible with Japan's position and with ongoing diplomatic efforts.
