Bundestag Vice President Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke) has spoken out in favor of his party cooperating with the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt in order to prevent a government involving the AfD in the federal state.
Background on the state election
In a BR24 Nachrichten broadcast, Ramelow argued late on Monday evening for cooperation between Die Linke and the CDU. The politician justified his initiative with concern that the AfD could otherwise assume governmental responsibility in Saxony-Anhalt.
Ramelow pointed to the political situation in the eastern German state. The background is the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, where polls have long seen the AfD as the strongest force. Forming a government without the CDU and without Die Linke is considered unlikely.
