In the first half of 2026, 3,053 new start-ups were founded in Germany – a record figure, in which artificial intelligence plays the central role, according to a study by the Startup-Verband.
The number of new company formations in the first six months of the year not only exceeds the second half of 2025 by 52 percent, but also the entire founding output of 2024. The Startup-Verband spoke of an unprecedented dynamic: "Über 3.000 neue Start-ups in sechs Monaten – so viel Gründungsdynamik gab es in Deutschland noch nie", said board chairwoman Verena Pausder. The basis of the survey are commercial register data, which were evaluated by the analysis firm Startupdetector.
Artificial intelligence is the most important driver of the development. 1,038 of the newly founded start-ups, and thus more than one third, have a clear AI focus. "Zentraler Treiber sei Künstliche Intelligenz, die es Gründern ermöglicht, schneller und einfacher mit weniger Kapital zu starten", explained Pausder. Her assessment points in the same direction: "KI senkt die Hürden fürs Gründen deutlich und immer mehr Menschen nutzen diese Chance."
