Rheine, 31 August 2026

The Augsburg-based transmission manufacturer Renk has begun production of drives for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle at its Rheine site, thereby setting the course for a significantly growing share of military orders.

The plant in Rheine, which previously supplied almost exclusively civilian customers, now also manufactures transmissions for the Puma, an infantry fighting vehicle of the Bundeswehr. Renk is responding to growing demand for defense technology, which is linked, among other things, to rearmament programs within the NATO framework and the delivery of vehicles to Ukraine.

From civilian plant to defense site

The decision is seen as an industrial-policy signal: Renk, a long-established manufacturer of drive technology headquartered in Augsburg, is expanding its civilian and military production in parallel. Jobs in the defense segment are being created at the Rheine site, while the civilian lines will continue to operate, according to the company.
