A report published on November 2, 2026 by the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative warns of rising sea levels and increasing storm surges because the polar ice caps, as well as Greenland and Antarctica, are melting faster.

The report calls for global temperatures to be brought back well below 1.5 degrees as quickly as possible to reduce the risks. This target is presented as a central condition for limiting the impacts of climate change.

The consequences of ice melt are already drastic today, according to the report. The polar ice caps and the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting roughly six times faster than they were in the 1990s.

Ice melt is accelerating markedly

The rapid loss of ice is decisive for the development of sea levels. Land ice that flows into the ocean increases the amount of water in the seas and thus directly contributes to the global water level.
