Research Organization: Global Sales of Electric Trucks and Buses Nearly Doubled in 2025

In the European Union, the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil, double-digit growth rates were recorded by the ICCT, driven primarily by the increase in electric buses. The economies mentioned are among the most important sales markets for heavy commercial vehicles and are considered indicators of the global development of electromobility in the transport sector.

China Remains the Dominant Market

With the increasing spread of electric trucks and buses, the composition of fleets in local public transport and freight transport is also changing. Cities and regions are increasingly investing in charging infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of e-vehicles. The trend toward the electrification of heavy-duty transport is considered an important building block for reducing CO2 emissions in road transport.

China remains by far the largest market for electric commercial vehicles. While the absolute sales figures in Europe, India, and Brazil are significantly smaller, the double-digit growth rates signal that the electrification of the heavy-duty segment is also gaining momentum outside the Chinese market.

Karin Rådström, CEO of truck manufacturer Daimler Truck, already pointed out last year the growing interest in battery-electric heavy trucks, emphasizing the importance of expanding charging infrastructure across Europe. Daimler Truck is one of the manufacturers actively driving the ramp-up of e-mobility in the commercial vehicle segment.

Political Promotion as a Driver

The ICCT is an independent research organization specializing in clean transport solutions. The organization regularly analyzes market developments in electric vehicles and publishes data that also serves as a basis for political decisions to promote the transport transition.

In addition to sales growth, factors such as battery prices, vehicle range, and the availability of subsidy programs play a crucial role. Governments in several countries have launched subsidies and procurement programs for electric buses in recent years to accelerate market ramp-up.

Outlook: Charging Infrastructure Decisive

Overall, the ICCT study shows that the global market for electric commercial vehicles is in a phase of strong growth. The doubling of sales within a year is considered a clear signal that the electrification of heavy-duty transport is gaining breadth, even though the share of electric vehicles in the overall fleet is still comparatively low.

Observers expect the trend to continue in the coming years. It will be crucial whether charging infrastructure in the key markets expands at the same pace as vehicle sales, according to industry sources. Otherwise, growth could lose momentum.
