Around every tenth preschool child in Germany is overweight, as a new evaluation by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) based on school entrance examinations shows.
Data Basis and Key Findings
According to its own statements, the RKI evaluated data from around 4.3 million children aged four to seven from 13 federal states, including Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. During the study period from 2006 to 2024, the proportion of overweight children aged four to seven in the districts and cities ranged between 8.6 and 13.4 percent. For obesity, i.e., severe overweight, it was 3.7 to 5.9 percent. Girls and boys were affected equally.
