Road traffic in Germany in 2024 continued to rely almost entirely on fossil fuels, according to an evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office, while electric drives are only slowly gaining ground.

Energy consumption and emissions of road traffic

As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported, around 2,134 petajoules were attributable to road transport in 2024 – equivalent to 22.2 percent of Germany's total final energy consumption. At the same time, the sector caused CO₂ emissions of 155 million tons, equivalent to 21.4 percent of all German CO₂ emissions. Road traffic thus remains one of the central causes of greenhouse gas emissions in the country.
