The Polish armed forces triggered an air alert in the southeastern border region of Lublin as Russia struck areas in western Ukraine from the air.
The Polish army command said the air alert had been activated overnight in the Lublin Voivodeship. The reason, it said, were Russian airstrikes on western Ukraine taking place in immediate proximity to Poland's eastern border. The armed forces described it as a precautionary step within the framework of ongoing airspace monitoring.
Lublin as an exposed border region
The Lublin region borders Ukraine directly and lies just a few dozen kilometers from crossings such as Dorohusk-Jahodyn. That makes it one of Poland's most exposed areas. Because of this geographic proximity, alerts there are followed particularly closely, both by the Polish government in Warsaw and by European allies. Since the start of Russia's large-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, military airspace surveillance in the eastern member states of the European Union and NATO has been significantly tightened.
