A Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv set the main church of the cave monastery, which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage, on fire over the weekend and injured at least 23 people, according to authorities.

In the attack on Kyiv, projectiles struck three districts of the city of millions, according to Vitaliy Klitschko. Tymur Tkatschenko spoke of more than 40 impacts in the capital. Some 30 vehicles caught fire, and around 140,000 Kyiv residents were temporarily left without electricity. According to media reports, the Russian attackers used more than 50 missiles and around 500 drones based on initial findings.

Damage to UNESCO World Heritage

The cave monastery on the hills along the Dnipro River was also affected. The monastery complex has been under UNESCO protection since 1990 and is part of the World Heritage. "According to operational information, there is serious damage on the grounds of the cave monastery," Tkatschenko wrote on Telegram. Tymur Tkatschenko spoke of "serious damage" on the grounds. Images and videos on social media showed a large column of smoke over the grounds of the world-famous pilgrimage site.
