Russian drones and missiles hit Kryvyi Rih – two dead and around a dozen injured

Kryvyi Rih lies approximately 350 kilometres southeast of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and is among the country's larger cities. According to reports, the city has repeatedly been the target of Russian airstrikes, as it holds strategic significance as a logistical hub and industrial site. Following the impact, authorities urged the population to seek shelter and stay away from damaged buildings.

According to available findings, the attack consisted of a combination of drone strikes and ballistic missiles, as have been deployed against Ukrainian cities on multiple occasions in recent months. Rescue teams were deployed for hours to recover those trapped under rubble and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Eyewitnesses reported loud explosions and shattered windows in several residential neighbourhoods.

Symbolic significance of the city

Kryvyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In earlier speeches, Zelensky had already pointed to the particular symbolic significance of his birthplace, which has come under fire repeatedly. The Ukrainian leadership condemned the attack as a deliberate strike against the civilian population and announced enhanced air defence in the region.

International observers assessed the shelling as part of an ongoing campaign of Russian airstrikes on civilian and military targets deep in the Ukrainian rear. Moscow has, according to information available so far, not commented on the specific attack. The United Nations and several European governments had repeatedly demanded in the past that attacks on civilian infrastructure be halted.

International reactions

Following the impact, rescue operations were carried out at full speed. The Ukrainian Interior Ministry stated that rescue teams, police and medical personnel from the surrounding area had been dispatched to the affected districts to provide support. The authorities also announced a review of damage to residential buildings, schools and critical infrastructure.

Among the population, the attack once again triggered dismay. Residents described that, despite repeated air-raid sirens, they continued with their daily lives because evacuations were in many cases not possible. Aid organisations began distributing food, water and warm clothing to families made homeless shortly after the impact.

Ongoing threat in the rear

The incident illustrates the persistent vulnerability of cities in Ukraine that are located far from the front line. While fighting continues in the east and south of the country, Russian drones and missiles regularly reach central and western parts of the country as well. The Ukrainian air defence stated that it had intercepted several further drones and missiles over other regions during the same night.

International reactions to the attack were initially slow to materialise. Diplomats from EU states referenced earlier statements in which attacks on civilians had been clearly condemned. Zelensky himself had emphasised in earlier appeals: "Kryvyi Rih ist die Heimatstadt von Präsident Selenskyj". The Ukrainian side announced that it would raise the incident in international forums.
