Russian opposition figure and war critic Boris Nadeschdin has withdrawn his candidacy for the parliamentary election planned for September in Russia, after he was briefly detained the day before and had previously been classified as a "foreign agent."

The 63-year-old Boris Nadeschdin, a former State Duma deputy, is one of the few Russian politicians who openly criticize President Vladimir Putin and the Russian offensive against Ukraine. On Sunday, he announced via the online service Telegram that he and his supporters would not submit the collected signatures to the election commission. "Wir werden nicht bei der Wahlkommission die aberhunderten Unterschriften überreichen, die wir gesammelt haben", he wrote.
