London, August 21, 2026

The sentiment indicator for the services sector in the eurozone improved slightly in August, according to S&P Global, and continues to point to growth.

The PMI as a Leading Indicator

The composite PMI – the aggregate index covering both manufacturing and the services sector – stood above the growth threshold of 50 points in August, according to S&P Global. The value for the services sector, which accounts for a particularly large share of economic output in the eurozone, thus edged upward. Economist Andreas Plecko assessed the development as confirmation that economic activity in the currency union remains on a growth course despite adverse circumstances.

In this context, growth means that more companies in the eurozone report rising demand and new orders than declining business. S&P Global publishes the data, which are based on monthly surveys of purchasing managers and business executives, regularly from its London headquarters. The indicators are considered one of the most reliable leading indicators for economic developments in the eurozone.
